    Looks like new battery time

Just opened the hood of my VX and found what looks like acid leak or corrosion on one connection. I'm gonna get the red top optima, but was also wondering if I should take this opportunity to replace other battery related items such as connectors? Opinions? Also, engine bay is very dirty and some parts are rusty. Any suggestions on that front?

Battery connectors prolly don't need to be replaced, just cleaned.

I'm kinda old school. Just brush them clean and connect. If you're worried about future corrosion, apply a liberal coating of bearing grease after everything is tight.

I've been told not to use that "spray on red crap". My mechanic son said that it doesn't help and is a PITA to clean off.

I have always used an electrical anti corrosion grease on mine. Its lighter that grease and works well.

Yea, most auto parts places have little packets at the checkout, battery, anti-sieze for a buck, grab a few then try and remember where you put them in 6 months. I must have about 10 of them.

Dont throw away the red top "cap". It looks like it was just for packaging, but you actually need to put it underneath to raise it up a bit to fit good. It clips onto the bottom.

My grandfather was a master mechanic; pretty much anytime he opened a hood and saw some crud on the battery he'd just squirt a bit of 3 in 1 oil on both terminals, give it a quick swipe with a wire brush and wipe it with a rag. Worked like a charm.
