Thumbs up 04 Axiom Direct Injection...

Was reading new issue of Truck Trends with a article on the new Direct Injection 2004 Axiom motor which adds about 10% and better gas mialage...

NICE! drops the 0-60 a full second down to 7.6
    and 1/4 mile @ 15.4@90.9

this is going to be faster than my VX with the S/C... blah

Wonder if this motor has anything we can steal from it for our VXs?

Crate an Axion engine in and lets hoist it into the VX. I am all for it.

If you did this, you'd need to bring the Axiom computer over as well... or try and reprogram the VX computer.

I know this has been brought up before, and Andy chimed in a bit with some interesting statements.

You would need a complete wiring harness as the axiom uses etc. You would also need a new pedal and due to the direct injection you would need a new fuel system. It works off of very high line pressure so the pump and lines would be different. New pcm also. It could be done though

hmm.....ecu swap isnt too complicated...ive done a few civics but the wiring might get tricky...also is the engine mounts the same or does it require some modifications to fit it in? last thing anyone know how much a used 04 axiom engine would cost?

Some articles of interest I found on the D.I. Engine:

    http://www4.fosters.com/autos/articl...o_1121_03j.asp

"The company announced the planned introduction of an all-new SUV in 2006. Isuzu intends for the vehicle to offer three rows of seating and will be powered by the same 3.5-liter direct-injection engine that will appear standard in the 2004 Axiom and as an option in the 2004 Rodeo."

According to CARB rules which most states and feds copy, if the receiving vehicle is covered by emission regulations, no matter how clean it is, before it can be tested the swap has the meet several critiera. First the new motor has to be the same year or newer than the vehicle. Second the motor needs to be of the same family as the veihcle. I.E. no Ford into Chevy ect. Now, with the Hombre being sold as an Izuzu, a 4.3 would be legal but not another GM motor not sold as a Izuzu.

If you can get past all this, then you go to arbitration and are then at the whim of a bureaucrat. There is also this old thread. Good luck.

Found this to be very much "Food for Thought" when concerning a major engine swap such as to the Chevy LT-1.

Would really like to know about this! Could be a viable option for those of us wishing to remain with the 3.5L should we encounter a terminal problem with our present powerplant.

Same...only location of fuel injectors has changed to directly firing into cylinders.
