    Toomas Heikkenen XGames crash

    During practice today for the X Games Rally-X Heikkenen crashed and broke his ankle. This is the crash...

    He wasn't even close to making the landing. Surprising considering how much speed he had going into the jump.

    He hit the ramp so hard that it moved the ramp about a foot. That ramp is big and heavy!

    Don't think luck had a lot to do with it (though it helps)...those cars are built like tanks. I watched an episode of "how its made" that showed the build process of WRC rally cars. 80% of the car is rebuild/replaced and the cages and safety equipment is the nest in the business. The cars are a million dollars plus each!

    I noticed the rally car sounded like cardboard crunching rather than sheet metal. I figured the crunch areas were made of some fancy composite.

    They use a lot of aluminum and carbon composits.

    ya, ouch. that was really hard. I thought they had people to do measurements and say, you need to be going 60-65 mph to clear this jump kinda thing?
