Bigger voids are good for mud, but you end up losing so much grip on any other surface that they are pointless. The stock all-season Duelers were better than the Xterrains! The looks do not balance the loss of performance, so I am back to ATs (this time BFGs).

Right now I've got the stock 18" Rims with 245/60/R18 on em. Would prefer not to replace the rims or spare if possible. Can I just use regular road tires or is there a nice hybrid AT available. Also, limited budget... can spend maybe $150 per tire.
    thanks, Mike
I have cooper AT3's on mine. Ran Moab last year and those tires stuck like glue to the rocks. Hardly slipped at all for the whole trip. Mine were around $200 each but that's for a wider rim than stock.

I dont really agree regarding "Mud" tires being bad for Moab.

I have consistently run Nitto Mud Grapplers at Moab ...
....and also driven other VX's there, with other brands.

I swear by my Mud Grapplers.....and just purchased a new set.
(They last very well... 5 years , and are not super noisy on normal roads)

When aired down correctly ( one of my issues on Hells Gate!)...

    ...I have found them excellent.

And...the big bonus is a very meaty/chunky side wall that offers all
kinds of additional traction and side wall protection.

Mud tires arent bad per se; I have run MTs out there for years. But I wouldn't regard them as something the OP needs to have for Moab.

Agreed, MT/Rs did great last year and so did the terra grapplers in my 2010 trip. I'm still happy I had the MT/Rs last year for Cliff Hanger because there was a lot of lose dirt... although a stock VX probably won't be running Cliff Hanger so it doesn't matter either way.

I love the looks of the Mud Grapplers (even more than the Xterrains)... very Fred Flinstone, and I did not mean to dis all MT tires. I stand by my review of the Xterrains though. Aired down to 15-20 PSI, they provided nowhere near the grip of the ATs. I think the tread pattern has a lot to do with it. The Nittos tread overlaps, and if you have a MT with the same basic pattern of an AT... you are not constantly on the void half of the tire rather than the rubber half.

Not to dis MTs again, but (unless you are red-lining through swamps all the time) don't get these...
