    Split CV Boots

Has anyone tried the split cv boots that slide over top of the joint and weld together with glue?

    Like this one?
    http://www.dormanproducts.com/p-2627-614-434.aspx

This says that it is not compatible with the VX though, but listed for reference.

However if you check the mecatech/other dormans that fit the VX the same boot also fits another near 1000 cars via Oreily auto parts website.

I personally would not use them. I look at them as more of a temporary fix...something to hold you over until you can do it right.

I hafta agree. If your OEM boots split, it's not likely that a glued together boot will last more than a few days.

BTW, MechaTech & Dorman boots didn't last for me either. They guy at the axle shop put on some boots imported from Canada that finally did the trick (look just like OEM). Unfortunately, I was never able to find them retail.

Someone posted a long time ago that Advance Auto over the counter boots are incredibly beefy & hold up well (also look like OEM). They are a lot cheaper than MechaTech.

I believe they're intended to be a temporary fix.

Surprising. I put Dorman boots on my rodeo when I first bought it about 7 years ago and they are still doing fine.

....after my OEM set split just after lifting ( normal!) I fitted Dorman...
....and 6 years later have only replaced one...cause I tore it on a rock.

I think these split boots are good emergency options...but then so is Duct tape!!

+2, Ripped my OEM boots after initial lift. Replaced with mecatech right before Moab 2009 and ripped both inner boots the first day and dust/sand destroyed my CVs.

Now I run EMPI brand boots and straighter half shafts. No CV problems in 2 years.

We'll all hafta agree to disagree on the whole CV issue. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it: lift/no lift, Dorman, MechaTech, diff drop/or not.

Trial & error seem to be the only solution till you get to works for you. Unfortunate for me the trial consisted of 4 sets of boots, 2 sets of half shafts & a diff drop before I finally settled on something that lasts.

I figured the opinions would be bad in these! I just don't see how they could work! I kinda want to try just for the heck of it. But it would like wiping my *** with a $20 bill and a few singles!

I split an outer one and not sure how long ago! It's not a bad split but....

    Cool

Recently split the outer driver-side original boot...can't complain after them lasting 13yrs & 157k miles, surviving a trip to Moab, plus 2" lift done years ago. I ended up using it as an excuse to finally install my diff-drop brackets I bought 4 years ago (1" drop) plus replaced all cv boots with Dorman but used the silicone (gray) ones.
