I'd remove just the engine. Remove the intake manifold first,it makes it much easier to remove the upper transmission bolts. Hope this helps.

Don't forget to remove the torque converter bolts from the flex plate.

    Engine removal

I didn't look at it very long, but it seemed that the engine and transmission couldn't be lifted high enough to clear the engine oil pan enough to slide forward to get them out as a pair.

I took as much off the engine as I could, intake/ super charger in my case, accessories, and wiring. But still ended up removing the transmission cross member, lowering the back of the transmission and using several socket extensions to get to the upper transmission mount bolts.

One thing that I found out a little late; The wiring can be easily disconnected up by the drivers side headlight and all the engine harness can come out with it. Similarly on the transmission.

When I reinstalled the rebuilt engine, transmission and transfer case, they all went in one at a time. Engine went in first complete, intake, wiring and all except the AC compressor and power steering pump (be careful there is a wire attached between the engine and the pump) that never left the engine bay. Then the transmission, route the wiring back up to the headlight area, the cooling lines and shift linkage. Transfer case was easy after all that. Actually went together pretty easily.

    Best of luck, Dan
