Sorry for the thread jack but Trekk mentioned his Probe GT, I had an '83 EXP GT Turbo that was one of the best handling cars I've ever owned with the comp suspension and Goodyear Eagle GT's. She cornered like a slot car...right up until the time that my then-fiancee rolled it! Talk about rare cars that nobody has heard of or cares about, wish I still had 'er! (The car that is, fiancee's long gone too...)

I believe you are right that a lot of car guys have the same taste. I've got my VX and am currently on the lookout for my first DSM. I want a 2G GSX or atleast a GST. I would settle for a GS if it was nice and had leather.

For me the 4g63 motor was the best bang for your buck modder friendly motor to work on. 500AWHP in a 2liter as a street car is just plain fun!! And with E85 (ethanol - 105oct) Icing on the cake!!

I dunno... I have mixed feelings. I HAD a 1990 Plymouth Laser (assembly line DSM cousin), 2.0 liter 5-speed. I was in love with the car for several years until one day I got a recall notice regarding a defective timing belt. Natch, I took it in and had it replaced. Things went downhill from there and less than 8,000 miles later the belt failed. I couldn't believe it. Fought tooth and nail with Chrysler and the dealer to absorb the cost. I won that time (and the next two times in less than 3 years). After failure number four I just threw in the towel and sent it to the boneyard. It was otherwise a great car, but that timing belt issue soured me on DSMs and Mitsubishis in general.
A dealer mechanic confided in me at one point and said he only saw this happen with manual trannies and that his brother-in-law had an automatic and this situation never happened to him. Go figure? Of course I'm assuming that Chrysler never upgraded the original design of the defective belt and just kept slapping the same crappy, unmodified part in each time it broke.

A little known secret: dealer mechanics are some of the worst hacks out there! Most of them work on flat rates and have plenty of jobs in line. That causes them to find shirtcuts and get really good at fixing cars FAST!

DSM timing belt is very tricky to do, most "normal machanics" screw it up. So dealer is better but they tent to skip certain steps. So I am not surprised when I hear about their failures.

But after mid 90's (after they went through couple of timing belt versions), timing belt hasn't been an issue.

    Nice Supra!

Do you know the difference between 350hp and 1000hp Supras? One runs 13's at 110mph, the other runs 13's at 140mph

Being one of the FAST and reliable DSMers, I can also laugh at those DSM stereotypes

I found all of mine to be reliable too:

93 - tranny replaced at 200K miles. I did have to replace the IAC (or sump'n to fix wild idle variations once too). Timing belt replaced once.

03 - started overheating at 150K but that was just a temp sensor gremlin I never traced down. Just turned on the AC if it temp started going up & the aux fan kept it from overheating. The black paint was FUBAR but I rekin that's OBE now.

04 - never been in the shop. Paint on the spoiler is shot though.

The 3000GT was a real lemon but it was a severely abused NYC car before I got it so I don't blame Mitsu.
