I am also ordering parts to do timing belt, tensioners, water pump, and thermostate so I was goign to try this first. that way I know what the problem was. although it warms up so fast I was thinking that the thermostat is stuck.

ok I did the fan clutch replacement last night. $34 Ebay free shipping part. when the part came I was suprised to see it was made in the USA....... well that is good! right!
swapped out the part and as soon as I started it, like other people have said, I could hear the fan, more wind noise and the sound of the fan blades churning the air. so I drove it. really hot weather, AC cranked. let it idle with the AC on parked for about 10 mins. needle stayed bellow half way between cold and hot. towing will really the the test but I can say it is helping. the thing heats up really quickly so the thermostat is of course going to be replaced when I do the timing belt.
Well that is my update. I am not saying that is everyones problem, or an ebay part will fix it. I am just saying that is what fixed my issue. for now.
here is the link so the part.

Hah! My vx has seen a ton of snow and salt.. Been in MD and PA as a daily driver for 7 years. I'm just anal about cleaning it and never let salt sit for more than a couple days. And yes i clean behind the bumper.

    Update on "Running hot"

So I took your collectively excellent advice to heart and ran thru a bunch of different things. The upshot is that everything checked out fine with the exception of the fan clutch -- which was worn and loose. So we replaced both the clutch and the fan with new Isuzu OEM units. This was several days ago. Ambient temperatures have been running in the mid 80's as opposed to the high 90's of two weeks ago. This makes it a little hard to tell. But I've not seen the engine temp gauge rise over the midpoint and I'm hopeful that the issue is solved. Again, thanks so much for the great feedback and also for the sense of community. Nice to know that there is a group of us committed to keeping our unique little VX beasties up and running for the long haul.

    my update

so I did a true test yesterday. towed a 5000 lbs trailer with AC going in about 90 degree weather. did not get above normal at all.
towed on the freeway, through town, about 20 miles total. temp was perfect.
