    Cool Loud Exhaust

Just got (finally) a 2001 Proton with 53K orig miles...southern calif native VX, never been off-road....but the exhaust sound is loud and gowl-ey. Could it be the $450 muffler? (it's factory original). At that price, I want some backup info before I spring!

Hey Pdlock - welcome to the addiction! A stock muffler shouldn't be loud and growl-ey unless it's been modified. I'd climb under the VX and see if you have a hole or mod somewhere. I'm in Santa Clarita with a totally stock VX and as far as I know a stock muffler. PM me and we can catch up and I'll take a listen for you.

And...there are many options other than the stock $450 muffler...

    ..which isnt available new anyway!

If you use the search function here, there are several "Exhaust" options threads.

BUT... if you want an original muffler....
I have one available....VERY good condition.
From a no rust 2001, 90k miles, California VX.

Check your flex joint first. They have a tendancy to go before the muffler. Also a fairly cheap repair.

I just so happen to have a brand new muffler that the previous owner of my VX gave me. His wife backed into something so he bought it thinking it would be needed and was not needed.
Make me a fair offer if that is what you need and I'll ship it out to you.

Well...I crawled under and it's a stainless Flowmaster, welded in with custom mounting and tailpipe. I'd be willing to trade the thing for a new (or excellent used) stock muff and tailpipe....I'm in Los Angeles Area (zip code 91364)
