Is there a different engine for each year?

Someone told me his 2000 VX had a 2001 engine in it because it had the 2001 on the rocker arm cover. Is there a difference in the engines for the three years? If so what? And could you provide proof of you answer please?

    Thank you

Are you talking about valve covers? If so, there is nothing special on my 01 covers. I tried attaching them here, but they larger than 600x400 file limit
96 Eclipse Spyder GSX (already turbo, AWD swap)
93 Eagle Summit AWD (4G63 turbo swaps)

    Leon,

No. I mean the whole engine. Is the 1999 different from the 2000 from the 2001?

From what I understand, all 3.5 engines (98-02) are basically the same (until you get into direct injected, 02+ engines).
