horrible grinding when turning

Your issue sounds like it is with the steering pump and or box. I would pop the hood and have someone turn the wheel while you listen. The pump and box are both on the driver side of the engine bay. I know when my fluid gets low (I have a leaky hose) it gets noisy when I turn the wheel. You might have a pump or steering box going out.

Tri, thanks I will do that. There's surprisingly a low amount of threads regarding steering issues. It certainly sounds & feels like its on that drivers side towards the front.
