Oil Catch Can

[Mile High VX]

Decided to add an oil catch can to see if that helps with consumption or improves performance.

I modified a power steering pump reservoir bracket from a 2000 Trooper. It's the same as the one for the VX, just easier to source. I cut it down to just the main leg and the clamp area. It was really close to the power steering hoses so I took a small vacuum line, split it, and covered the edge of the bracket for some extra padding and remove any rough edges. I attached it with the same bolt as the power steering pump bracket on the VX, mounting it on top of the existing bracket. A few cut, hammer it out flat instead of that big bend that it has, some paint and done.

The circle clamp holder fit nicely on the catch can that I ordered, but I still cut a can koosie (that foam holder for your soda) and padded the grip. You can't use the really thick ones, just the kind that fold flat. I bought one at Wal-Mart for a quarter.

Turned out really nice in my opinion. I used the OEM clamps from the PCV set up so it has that OEM look.

I also cut out the small square on the edge of the engine cover to allow the line from the PCV, that I took the valve out of, to reach the catch can without any harsh bends.

That's a really nice install! Just make sure to keep an eye on the oil level in the catch. The intent of the catch is to allow the oil to drain back into the valve cover after the system loses pressure (engine is turned off). It looks like yours is more of a reservoir and will retain the oil.

It has the site glass on the side and it drains from the bottom so no need to remove to drain it.

I'll keep an eye on it. I'm interested to see how much oil it actually traps and keeps out of the intake. It has a baffled design inside that's supposed to be helpful in capturing more of the oil. We'll see how it goes in the next several weeks.

So tell us how it goes, does it work as expected? better? worse? would you recommend it?

I've not noticed any real difference in oil consumption. I'm still working on using BG 109 (EPR now) and using Rotella T-6.

I don't have to buy and PCV valve every oil change so I'm saving money there...only take about 28 oil changes with no PCV valve to pay for the catch can.

I like the look and I'd do it again, but no real reason to do so from an improvement standpoint.

Cool thanks, doing some research on oil consumption and how to prevent future engine failure and what to do for the Ironman engine we will soon be installing so it does not fail in less than 70K like the current engine did. Extra piston drain back holes seem to be a good insurance policy from what I have read about it.

So it's been about 7 months now.

I've been using BG EPR (109) and BG MOA with every oil change and using Rotella T6.

I've cut my oil usage by 50%. Never used a lot but I've gone from a quart every 1000 miles to a half quart so I'm happy at this point.

I am thinking about doing a catch can too, I figure it can't hurt and you had good results so why not.
