Just installed navigation system????

Have just installed Pioneer's AVIV-N1.....I am speechless...don't exactly know where to begin...will post detailed review later...but it will be a postive report I assure you...

One question...I know several members have this unit already..I need to know where???? the "speed sensor" wire should be connected(pink wire)...I have looked behind the speedometer cluster??? I do not have a schematic to know the wireing code color..the install manual(Pioneer's) refers to the fuel injection module...just need to know the "wiring color" there to this "Speed Sensor" and install this "pink" wire...

It works without it great...but will not display some functions unil it is connnected......any help is greatly appreciated...

Can't answer your question, but I just got to see one of those units up close and personal and those things are SWEET. Quoted me $2800 for the install, and I know you can get 'em for $1500 (pre-install), so if I ever get it, it probably won't be where I saw it.

Buy it from Australia on eBay, install it yourself (super-easy) and save a bundle! Less than a grand!

As for the pink wire, more than likely it's tapping the sensor input at the ECU which is located under the CD changer. Hopefully someone with the unit will chime in on the specifics.

I do not have the speed sensor hooked up. it is only used in tunnels or weak signal areas where the gps and gyro are not enough.

The other gauge functions will become active after the sensors learn a bit.

In order to locate the speed sensor for the N1, you need to remove the bulbous plastic cover from underneath the 2nd din area (under the lighter). Here you will see 3 main wire plugs with many different colored wires hooked into them. Starting from the left is #1 plug and so on towards the right. I had some help from a guy who worked at Best Buy auto stereo installation in determining the correct wire. According to his electronic schematic wiring instructions, it calls for the light green wire with a white solid stripe located on the far left (#1) plug. We both looked through all the wires in #1 only to find that it was wrong. So we decided to look through the #2 and #3 plug and sure enough it was on # 2 (middle plug). What we did to make sure it was correct is spliced a volt meter into it and drove around to see the readings move. If there's no readings while moving, it's the wrong wire. It should start changing the reading while driving and will change variably in different speeds and the same when you come to a stop.



What you may do to search for this particular wire is to dig deep as it was buried in the back. I forget which pin# it was on the plug but I think you can find it in the archives that was mentioned briefly under speed sensor. Here you can see the Pioneer pink wire spliced into the light green wire with a solid white stripe.



If no one wants to mount their GPS antenna on top, run the wire to the far left side of the dash board and place the magnetic antenna on top of the metallic portion of the dash near the vin #plate closest to the windshield. The reception is perfect and the mount is very inconspicuous.



I cannot guarantee that the #2 plug will contain your green/white wire. But that's where it was for mine even though the schematic says otherwise. Also, make sure that it's the light green wire as there are other darker than light green wires with other colors included.

As a quick review, I've installed the unit within a couple hours but took me 3 days as I had to remove the older generation Pioneer a/v system with all the wires and brain unit. This unit is very easy to install and the interface is also quite intuitive. I tested the unit out for the San Diego VX meet this summer and it worked out great. I felt more confident of not getting lost anymore and being able to find gas stations and or other public facilities a breeze. Also hooked up my current Panasonic DVD player and was able to switch back and forth from the DVD playing and the GPS disc while driving.

Good luck with the hunt and hope this helps finish your electrical wiring. You're going to love it!!!

This is a dream to operate..it's really "stupid person" friendly... ...Have not done the DVD thing yet but passing through the learning curve now with the "search address" and remote..stuff...still pressing some wrong buttons alot..but the will figure it out, if I dont crash first.

I used the "address search" three times(not counting screwing around with it going to my house)

I am very familiar with GPS..having spent a Loooooong cold rainey nite on a Cous deer hunt in Ariz. 15 years ago lost!!
I appreciate these little instruments. I have added four
counting this one since that cold nite..I have a Lowrance and an Audiovox for the hiking and a DeLorme 4.0 with a laptop for off roading in strange places. This unit smokes them all, except that the Pioneer is not really suited for off road navigation as many of the roads going into "off road" country are not recorded on the CD. Its not really that big of a deal for me because I have the other GPS's What would really be cool is to have the user friendliness of the AVIC linked to the DeLorme style with a 3d set up and more detail. This would take more CD's but would make this "GIZMO" perfect....

Follow up note to this thread...

Yes...the speed sensor wire is green with a white stripe...in the middle wire cluster of the ECM underneath the plastic bubble just below the CD changer.....But!!! there are 2 green wires with white stripes in that cluster...The lite green is one

Holy CRAP! Thats a SMOKIN' deal! If they had another right now, I'd swipe it up in a heartbeat and I don't even have a need for it! lol That unit is incredible... I used to think the AVHP-6500DVD was a nice unit... this new one puts my old fav to shame.
