A little spot called Rock Corral

Triathlete and I got together this afternoon for an impromptu trip to a place called Rock Corral. Against a backdrop of threatening thunderheads we set off into the desert to explore this little-known area, soon to become a designated wilderness. The road was well-rutted from the Arizona monsoons which have been especially vigorous down here near the Mexican border.

    GREAT photos you guys!!,

L ks like a fun afternoon. Does "designated wilderness" mean no more off roaders allowed? Hope thats not the case.

Off Roading is okay as long as you stay on existing trails...which we did!

About the wilderness issue... we've begun to see increasing damage being done to the backcountry by ATVers and others who don't stay on the 4wd roads. Fly over the desert, and its really obvious what's happening. Encroachment from housing is also an issue.

This area - the Rock Corral and surrounding mountains - is still habitat for mountain lions, bobcats, ringtails, etc, and protects rarely seen archaeological sites.

The wilderness designation doesn't affect access to existing roads, but it hopefully will help deter people from blazing new trails. I want to see future generations enjoy the desert just the way we have.
