Exclamation Hey, newbie here, got a question on gearing....

Strait from therangerstation.com...here i am, selling my ranger and buying a Vehicross. Tired of fords ****. But heres my question, i love the vehicross, the way it drives, handles, offroads, everything (minus looking backwards, but who cares, im always passing people).

But What i really dont like is the gas milage...

What do people around here average stock in terms of gas milage????

What gear ratio is in the drive on these things, and is there a possibility of Changing the gears to get a better gear ratio (on my old ranger i went from 4.56's to 3.73's, Gave me an extra 5 mpg on the highway. Lost a bit of power though, but i dont mind cuz i drive cross country all the time for school)

And if i were to do this, if it is at all possible...Who carries the gears, anyone done it?(what cost) And does it adversely affect the TOD system????

    Thanks!

Check out these two threads regarding gear swaps. Most people interested in swapping gears are doing it to regain the pep lost by running larger tires, but there is a lot of useful information to be found here:

IIRC, the stock tires are about 29-1/2" in diameter, so bumping up to 31's will slightly decrease your gas mileage.

    ........

stock '01 VX got 400 miles to a tank. at 10,000 miles it got 300 miles per tank. at 15,000 miles it got 200 miles per tank. fuel miser and $100 later it got 210 miles per tank, Tornado and $100 more later it got 220 miles per tank, $110 more later and a Calmini airfilter it got 230 miles per tank, and who knows how much $ later and 456 gears it is getting between 230 and 260 miles per tank. BIG difference in power in the 430 stock gears and 456's though, but I also am running 305 70 Goodyear MTR's on 17 inch KMC venom rims. I do not beleive you will like the lower than 430 gears whichever you go with. you may get better mileage, but driving worse than dangerous safe is not worth it.
Let the VX perform and just fill the tank, unless you mod it to perform better you will just be wasting money to safe gas unless you tear the whole drivetrain out and start over from scratch.
