Hi
I was just wondering what its like if one gets a flat with 285/60/18's and has to use the space saver spare...will it even work? Can you drive it with such a huge diff in size ? Safely ? anyone have any experience with this?

I don't have quite as large a difference as you (265 70 16) but my experience might shed a little light. A few weeks ago I had a flat out on the I-10 freeway in Az near the New Mexico border, more than 100 miles from home. I tried driving home with the spare, but any time I got to 35mph or so the TOD started going nuts and locking. I finally pulled into a Big-0, and two hours after closing a Big-O salesperson was willing to come down and sell me a full-sized tire/spare.
Driving with the stock spare was aweful!

I would not even "try" using the stock spare if you have 285's on your VX. I have 285's and I'm no auto mechanic but the variance in tire size alone would more than likely make steering extremely hard and may cause loss of control on road aside from your TOD malfunctioning.
Best bet I would think is to buy another tire like the 285's you have, get maybe a used 18' OEM Isuzu wheel, if that's what you have all around, and put them together. Good to have, only problem is paying for it and where to keep it....in your VX or at home.
VX4EJR,
Survey says.....Roof rack!!!

The spare will allow you to limp home...nothing more. It will be a long day though as you would be cruising along at no more than 30mph.

Could you pull the TOD fuse to avoid these problems?
