Arrow Mobil 1 Truck and SUV version

Has anyone tried this Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w-30 synthetic oil? I grabbed it at Wal-Mart and put it in our two '99's that were running Mobil 1 0w-30. It seemed to make an improvment in performance in terms of engine noise level and improved acceleration. Anybody else have any info on this version of Mobil 1? Maybe it's just my imagination but they seem to claim it's heavier duty than regular Mobil 1 and formulated just for SUV/Trucks.

Always look on the back at the API/SAE ratings to see what you're getting. The Truck & SUV was originally a "consumer" packaging of Mobil Delvac-1, the synthetic diesel motor oil, but was recently changed to just a different multigrade formulation.

What weight and grade you run should be determined by your environmental conditions and driving style. Most lubricant web sites, including www.mobil1.com, will have an online assistant application to help you decide if what's in the owner's manual is a little too cryptic.

I checked out Mobil1's site and it says that we can use 5w-30, standard, extended performance, or truck & suv for their "ultimate" level of performance. I used to use only Amsoil 2000 Series 0w-30 and was extremely happy with it, but I've since switched to Mobil1 (which costs me about half what I was paying for Amsoil) and I haven't noticed any degradation. I've used both standard and truck & suv formulas.

They probably differ mostly in additive package and use the same base oil. It is also a multigrade and some people feel that the 0w30 (not multigrade) quiets the engines down more.

Here's a thread on Bob is the Oil Guy about just what you're asking:

    What the API symbols mean:

There is some good stuff here, although the site is fugly:

I'm actually gonna try Chevron Delo 15w40 next change after reading a bunch of stuff and this thread about Shell Rotella 15w40 fixing the Isuzu 3.5L oil consumption problem for somebody:

I'm running Amsoil XL 5w30 right now and don't really care for it. It's hard to tell at this point, though, since it's only the first oil change I've put in it and it is loaded with UV dye.

Thank you all for the excellent input. We are finding that the Truck/Suv M1 is quieter than the ow-30. Just for comparison sake.

I would personally shy away from using anything too different from the 5w-30 recommended by Isuzu. Oil consumption is indicative of a bigger problem such as worn rings or a leaking gasket. I think maybe a heavier weight oil masks the symptoms for a while, but it doesn't actually correct the source of the problem.

Oddly enough, I use Mobil 1 5w40 "Truck & SUV" motor oil for my Elise.

Sounds odd, but it's per manufacturer's specs!

My recent switch-over to this black gold was a great improvement to my engine . Only 40k miles on the engine but it was already getting some minor pinging. All gone now. Highly recommended.

Do you think motor oil has an effect on pinging? I switched from AMSOil 2000 Series 0W-30 (supposedly one of the best motor oils available) to Mobile 1 5W-30 a number of months ago, and although I never thought there was a correlation, I haven't heard any pinging in quite a while. I figured it was cheap Arco and Aafes (military PX) gas that was causing it, but I still use the same fuel and I think the problem has gone away. Maybe it was the oil???

I'm still love'n this 5w-15 Mobil 1 for trucks/SUV's. We've definitely got more get up and go and both of ours ('99's 80 K miles) are running quiter than on the 0w-30 Mobil 1. I think it's got to be engineered differently or something (even though a little voice in my head keeps saying "it's just marketing hype"???)
