I wouldn't remove it. If anything, go over it with your material.

You can also add up to 3 layers of sound deadening material to the whole - that's what I did and it reduced the interior noise significantly.
I did not remove it, seemed quite permanent and was the same color as the body (silver in my case).
You will find the same stuff on the front floor boards. It was interesting how it looked 'melted' on the passenger side over the TOD unit.
Hey Etlsport, may I ask what sound deadener you used? What kind of difference have you noticed? I'm thinking about only doing the cargo area behind the front seats as that should be the easiest on which to work.
